To compare to viene usato per enunciare preferibilmente delle somiglianze: The poet compared life to an adventure, il poeta paragonò la vita a un'avventura, mentre to compare with si usa per spiegare anche somiglianze, ma soprattutto differenze: Prices have risen by only 2% this year compared with 5% two years ago, i prezzi sono cresciuti solo del 2% quest'anno, a differenza del 5% di due anni fa. In modo intransitivo, soltanto to compare with è corretto: The salary he earns at home does not compare with (mai to) what he might earn abroad, il salario che riceve nel suo paese non è paragonabile a quello che guadagnerebbe all'estero.
